Prof Adamu Abubakar Rasheed disclosed this weekend that the National Universities Commission (NUC) will give licence to 150 new private universities to operate in Nigeria in the next three years.

The NUC boss took a swipe at those calling for suspension of approval for the establishment of such schools. According to him, those calling for the suspension are ignorant because the approved 152 universities in Nigeria can not cater for 150 million people.
He used Argentina as a yardstick, he stated that Argentina with a population of 41 million has 1705 universities while some countries with lesser population has over 300 universities.
“Presently 243 applications are being processed for private universities, so in the next two to three years we will have about 150 universities” he said.
